As well as the support to local good causes, Lions clubs have common values.
From providing programmes that focus on hearing loss, to supporting efforts to control and prevent diabetes, we're working to improve the health of children and adults in local communities. Helping those who do not enjoy the highest standard of health is the purpose of many projects undertaken by Lions clubs. From raising money to fund vital medical equipment for hospitals and hospices, to helping vulnerable individuals; members of Lions clubs care about health issues.
Lions Clubs International provides unrivalled support for sight programmes and services within local communities across the world. Projects designed to prevent blindness, restore eyesight, improve eye health and benefit eye care have been an essential part of the work of Lions clubs for nearly 100 years.
It was in 1925 when Helen Keller, the inspirational deaf-blind campaigner, challenged Lions to be "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness. Nine out of 10 of the world’s visually impaired people live in developing countries. Lions clubs in the British Isles donate to Lions Sight Savers, a registered charity set up in partnership with Sightsavers.
This charity is run by volunteer Lions, so all donations fund projects supported by Sightsavers in East Africa and the Indian sub-continent.
Lions clubs throughout Great Britain and Ireland support a number of established initiatives that help build communities of motivated and capable young people, or offer opportunities for individuals to get involved in helping others.
From hands-on projects to supporting emergency relief programmes, Lions Clubs International’s community and environmental activities help those in need and improve the neighborhood’s in which we all live and work.
Our size and global reach mean we are able to work with communities on a local basis throughout the world. Through the actions of individual Lions clubs we are able to respond to very specific needs and are able to co-ordinate efforts across areas where our combined support can increase the level of help provided.
Within Lions Clubs International the British Isles Lions clubs can offer humanitarian support across the globe to local communities affected by disasters.
